Michelle Garcia Winner, Social Thinking. Michelle and I were transitioning from Social Thinking’s presentation to mine at the NYC Learning and the Brain Conference in May 2019. It was great to see Michelle and the Team!
Dr. Leslie Laud, Founder of ThinkSRSD and I at the Learning and the Brain Conference. Dr. Laud stated that she had just heard of my book a couple weeks before!

Shawn was invited to speak at the New York City Learning and the Brain Conference: “Schooling Social Minds” in May 2019. It was AMAZING to be part of a conference with such renowned speakers, such as Michelle Garcia Winner, Social Thinking, Dr. Laugeson of PEERS training from UCLA, and Temple Grandin.

Shawn’s book at the Conference Book Store…….. which, at the end of the conference, sold out.

It’s such an honor and at the same time–so strange–to be a new author. I was asked many times to sign my book! I really appreciate all of the excitement and encouragement!

Backstage at “Be More Chill”
with Co-Writer

During our time in NYC, we went to see Be More Chill. Together, Marissa Morrison, an LA teacher and Co-writer of the Social Theatre™ Language Arts Social Emotional Learning Curriculum (on the right) and I (on the left) along with another author friend, Kristine Hansen, were able to meet the actors backstage. A few of the actors even recorded video messages for Social Theatre’s participants who love their show!

Social Theatre’s Not for Profit, Trustee Peggy Markey at at her son’s “Stuck” movie premier. (Riley Thomas, screen writer, middle)

After NYC, I made another connection with a dear friend and trustee of the “Community Social Theatre” Not for Profit Board, Peggy Markey (Second from the Left). Peggy’s son, Riley Thomas, (in the middle) wrote a deep but thought provoking musical that portrays perspectives in an uplifting way. Riley Thomas’ musical “Stuck” has been in the theatres and is now out on livestream. Riley’s next musical is now Off-Broadway in New York City, which is called “My Real Mother.”

Celebrating our Human Quirkiness

And……would you know? I met one of the cast members from “Stuck” who was backstage and a main actor in “Be More Chill?” Gerard Canonico. Small World! But, seriously……….if you get a chance, go see Be More Chill. It has a wonderful message about accepting your uniqueness. Be More Chill has a message that wonderfully ties in to the misson of Social Theatre– We accept and celebrate our quirks and unique-ness!
