We can’t expect people to learn social and communication skills from a worksheet or talk therapy. Therefore, Social Theatre has fun curriculum to be utilized for after school clubs, related services, and for Language Arts.

Transition 18-22 Program

Social Theatre has written a Social Emotional Learning curriculum for the 18-22 population, which includes teaching a social skill every week with practice through improv activities and fun plays. Social Theatre has been helping to run Social Theatre groups which include ways to increase SEL opportunities outside of the group. Improv is a wonderful way to help the transition population to increase social interaction and practice the social skills in order to connect with each other. We have been told by participants that Social Theatre does not feel like we are learning, because it is mostly fun. Whereas, we have been told by professionals that they have never expected certain skills to be produced by their some of their students, and have been very happy with the results.

Why obtain a license in Social Theatre ™ ?

Professionals such as teachers, and related service personnel are up against challenges as implementing new ideas and programming. In Social Theatre, leaders are given flexibility to learn alongside students as activities are scaffolded for exposure and social cue recognition. The scaffolding of the activities and improv games begin small and build so that those leading the program can also feel comfortable.

Within humanity, one of our primitive needs is to belong, in which people try to belong some out of the wrong way with trying to be funny. What is important is Social Theatre is learning how to be part of a group process that provides opportunities for collective humor which increases belongingness. Thus, discouraging stand up comedy, which is done individually. The curriculums are designed to cycle and re-cycle and being able to utilze the Social Theatre Sketch Comedy Writing Process for only 10 weeks, or to continue for years.

As Social Emotional Learning programs are in greater demand, afterschool opportunities are needed. However, a challenge presents itself in motivating participants to consistently attend afterschool SEL programs. Some social emotional learning programs teach important skills through listening to books and doing worksheets, but for afterschool programming this would be a hard sell.  Social Theatre ™ presents a fun way to learn and practice “Real Time” social and collaborative skills while giving back to the community. Moreover, kids and teens practice how to utilize healthy and collaborative humor, which can contribute to better coping skills.
