“Did you get my text?”

“Yes.  I just texted you back.”

Playground Supervisor:  “You can’t have cell phones at school!” Takes cell phones away.  Walks around playground.

Student starts talking.  Other student is not listening correctly.

Other student shows ways not to listen:

  1. Staring at ceiling
  2. Stare at them, but don’t say anything/like a statue.No expression
  3. Back towards person
  4. Sarcastic excitement.
  5. Hands busy/wiggling

Narrator Part:

What’s going on here?

What are ___________’s feelings?  (point to one not being listened to)

Yes, you are right.  It made her feel bad and made her feel like she didn’t want to talk to that person or maybe that that person did not like her.

Unfreeze the non-listening person: “The right way to listen is for you to look at her, nod, have a nice tone, say nice things like “wow and cool”, and ask questions!

Let’s try it again!

UNFREEZE!!!

  1. The two actors engage in reciprocal conversation and listen the right way.
